Carnegie Mellon University HCII Wins Interactionary Panel
Competition
On April 9th, 2003, six Masters students from Carnegie
Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute won the annual
Interactionary
design competition at the Computer-Human Interaction
(CHI) conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They competed
against teams from Eindhoven Technical University and Nokia
Research. The design challenge, to develop an amusement
park kiosk, was revealed while the team was on stage and
they had ten minutes to complete a solution in front of
a live audience and esteemed panel of HCI judges. They were
evaluated based on four categories: Process, Teamwork, User
Focus, and Design.
The team spent several weeks practicing and refining their
approach, ultimately using a combination of sound HCI methods,
quick thinking and flashy signs to win. Hats off to the
fellow contestants who provided a great challenge.
